Multiplication is adding the same number over and over.

Example: 4+4+4+4+4+4 is 24. But for multiplication you can just go 6 x 4 = 24.

Mutaplation is counting the same numbers over and over. 
To identifying a word problem follow these steps. 

1. First look for the group size as in how many things there are in the group.
1. Melanie worked 3 hours for 5 days. How many hours did she work in total?
2. After that look for the number of groups. That means how many groups there are.
